Membership at Zion
Zion Lutheran Church is a family of Christian believers dedicated to reach out to our community and to the world, sharing Christ. We are committed to sharing our Savior's blessings through worship and the love we show our neighbor.
Membership at Zion is a privilege open to all. Please contact us if you would like more information about Zion Lutheran Church or membership at Zion. We are happy and ready to serve you!
A new member "Welcome to Zion Class" is held monthly, on or about the third Sunday of the month. This class, lasting about 1.5 hours, will introduce prospective members to Zion by sharing basic information about the congregation and expectations of Zion members. At this event, applications for membership are distributed. The class must be attended by all prospective members over the age of 17, although prospective members under age 17 are always welcome!
The "Welcome to Zion Class" is followed by a "Divinely Designed Class" which assists individuals to discover how God has uniquely gifted them for service in His Body, the Church. This class is offered on or about the fourth Sunday of the month. Participants will complete a Spiritual Gifts Inventory and a Personality Profile, and will receive a follow-up visit from one of Zion’s Divinely Designed Team members to help them discover how they might best become connected with Zion’s ministries.
Adults are received into membership through Transfer from a sister LCMS congregation, Profession of Faith, Baptism, or Adult Confirmation. Any adult who has been baptized in a Christian church may become a baptized member by completing the membership application form. Communicant (Confirmed) membership is available for adults who have previously been confirmed in the Lutheran Church. Adult Confirmation Classes are offered several times each year for adults who wish to be a confirmed (or communicant) member. Baptism is available upon request for adults and children who have not previously been baptized.
Infants become baptized members when they receive the Sacrament of Holy Baptism, or when they join the congregation with their parent(s). Children and youth receive instructions in Bible teachings through Sunday School, Mid-week Confirmation Classes (grades 5-8), our Lutheran Elementary School, and Mayer Lutheran High School. The Rite of Confirmation is offered to students in their eighth grade year.
In addition to godly behavior and confession of faith, Zion has the following four basic expectations of its members:
1. To be faithful in regular worship, prayer, and participation in the sacraments established by God for the Spiritual uplifting and encouragement of His people. (Exodus 20:8; Hebrews 10:25; 1 Corinthians 11:26)
2. To be faithful in regular Bible Study, both personal and corporate. (Luke 11:28; 1 Peter 2:2,3; Hebrews 6:1-3; Hebrews 13:17)
3. To be faithful in living lives of eternal significance. (James 1:23-25; Romans 12:1,2; 1 Corinthians 6:19,20)
4. To be faithful in the financial support of the Lord's work. (Malachi 3:8-12, Matthew 23:23; 2 Corinthians 9:6-15).
